Writing WORKSHOPS
UPCOMING CLASS:
Screenwriting for Writers
5 sessions, 2 hours each, On Zoom
POSTPONED
Maybe you’re a novelist or blogger or journalist or poet. You know the fundamentals of storytelling and have your own writing practice but there’s always been one elusive medium that’s forever piqued your interest and you’ve never dived in… the movies, baby. If this describes you, take a class with me!
In this five week course we’ll cover the fundamentals of writing for the screen. We’ll discuss: classic Hollywood concepts of story structure, less-than classic Hollywood concepts of story, screenplay formatting and conventions, capturing character on screen and in dialogue, writing in images, and what makes a good story become a great film.
Class will be a mix of lecture/discussion and facilitator-led generative writing exercises. At the end of five weeks, you’ll walk away with a short treatment/pitch document to kickstart your next exciting screenwriting project.
A Zoom workshop with Hillman Grad Productions. (I’m top middle.)
Meet your new writing best friend…
Hi there. I’m a working screenwriter with a background in journalism and training as a playwright. My plays have been seen across the country— and one opera was even performed in London— and I recently sold a screenplay that’s in development with the production company MarVista. I was the right-hand man of writer/producer Sheila Callaghan (Shameless) developing projects for Fox, Amazon, and Netflix.
I also really, really love teaching writing and working with other writers to develop their voices. I aim to identity and amplify what’s intrinsically great about whomever I’m working with. I’ve put that into practice while teaching screenwriting for producer Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Mentorships and playwriting at Carnegie Mellon University, and also through private writing coaching with numerous clients including memoirists, playwrights, and a chart-topping comedy podcaster.
